Hi friends!
I hope that you and yours are healthy and sane, conquering these strange times one day at a time. It can be a challenge to juggle our various new roles, all while keeping up with our usual day-to-day tasks. Now we’re also acting as teachers to our homeschooled children, as full-time chefs for our family, and busy as ever cleaning our homes that are now also our office and gym. It’s not always easy for me, so I try to look at this time as an opportunity to stay positive with focusing on the light at the end of the tunnel. When we come out of this, we will all be stronger and better than ever!
Another thing I’ve learned is how important self-care is. For us women, this can include a myriad of activities, products, and routines. For me, I include my tan-extending routine into the self-care category. We all want the gorgeous bronze glow of our spray tan to last forever, but without the proper preparation and maintenance, our results can be short-lived. However, if you follow these twelve expert tips outlined below, you'll be extending the life of your spray tan by as much as another week! Not only that, but it will also fade more evenly, and keep those dreaded splotches of color from appearing on your skin.
#1. Exfoliate and shave before your appointment, but not less than 12 hours before. This will give your pores the time they need to close up. Open pores invite the spray to leak inside, leading to dark spots on your skin.
Then, don't exfoliate for the duration of your spray tan's life, and wait at least two days before shaving again.
#2. Don't use makeups or lotions on the day of your spray tan, and even avoid applying deodorant if you can. It’s best to show up to your appointment without any oils on your skin. This is because the water-based spray can become blocked by an oil barrier, resulting in uneven results.
#3. Minimize movement for 6-8 hours after your spray tan. By opting to get your spray tan
applied in-home, your after-session mobility will be limited, and your spray tan will set better. When wearing clothes during these 6-8 hours, select loose and darker options that don’t cause friction.
#4. Leave your tan on for 6-8 hours before washing it off in the shower. The longer you leave it on, the longer your tan will last.
#5. Avoid wetness and sweating for the 6-8 hours after your spray tan. Where there is the possibility of moisture, apply powder to keep it dry. I include applying dusting powder on my clients in areas they might feel have a little more moisture after each session.
#6. After application, shower BEFORE you exercise the first time. Otherwise, streaks could occur.
#7. Moisturize 1-2 times daily to maintain your spray tan, but avoid greasy products. Use of these will degrade the spray tan, shortening the time that your skin is perfectly bronzed. Use, instead,
fractionated coconut oil, almond oil, or jojoba oil right after a shower to lock in moisture. There are also spray-tan specific moisturizers on the market, like the Renew Green Tea Moisturizer, available through my wholesaler, Fantasty Tan.
#8. Steer clear of chlorinated water. Chlorine will strip your tan.
#9. Avoid hot showers, as hot water fades your color quickly.
#10. Resist soaking in water (especially warm water) as often as you can.
#11. Pat dry rather than scrub dry after your showers.
#12. Use a tan enhancer that has DHA mixed in with a moisturizer to boost the life expectancy of your tan, but wait at least 48 hours before applying this type of product. A tan extender will add a bit of color back into your tan and keep your skin looking fresh. But to avoid overdoing it, you may want to alternate between a tan enhancer and your regular moisturizer every other day.
